The Univ. of OK Clarinet Symposium...thoughts

Hello all!

Although the symposium was a while ago, I thought I'd add my rambling opinions of it. This was a big trip for me, my first plane ride, my first time further west than Pulaski, TN, and also I was mostly on my own and having to deal with things like a normal person. Anyway, enough about myself.

From a first timer's experience, I found this event hugely educational, lucrative, and wonderfully enjoyable. I come from a very small school in Middle GA (Mercer Univ.) where I am the lone clarinet major and have never really had a role model to follow. This symposium gave me the opportunity to listen to some really GREAT players, learn in masterclasses from Mitchell Lurie and Jon Manasse, and talk to some very interesting people like Charles Bay of Bay Mouthpieces. To meet and talk with these people who shared a common interest in this wonderful instrument was a real treat and a wonderful experience. I found all the participants very nice and accepting and enjoyable to be around. It was really great, and I'm hoping to attend again next year if I can afford it.

I was wondering if anyone else reading this BB was in attendence? I'd love to hear your opinions!

Happy Clarineting!
Heidi

i went to 4 of these in a row- 1995, 96, 97 and 98.... but it's a bit far to travel from nz! i miss going to "the symposium", i always thought it was strange that more players from further away in the US didn't come (ie players from "out east")... Dr Etheridge does a great job.

I agree with Heidi. Being a young clarinetist from GA the experience was amazing. Hey Heidi!! It is Chris... We had a great time huh?!? YEA!!! Not to mention that I saw Jon Manasee on the way home too!! I would recommend the symposium to anyone that would like to see many wonderful clarinet performances. All of them we spectacular.
