 Do you want clarinet photos?
Author: GBK
Date:   2002-06-22 17:40

Here is a web site which I had never seen before. It has a number of different galleries with photos of practically every clarinet imaginable (metal and wood). Many I had never heard of. Just click on all the different galleries towards the bottom of the 1st page. Enjoy...GBK

Thanks GBK. That Bettoney "Cyril Adams" is one I overhauled and sold on eBay last year. It's nice to see a picture of it.

GBK --

Great resource you've found (as we've come to expect from you)! Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately it doesn't want to load completely on my machine -- the text is garbled. Any indication of who put this site up? (I can't tell because I can't read anything there.)

The pictures load fine (too bad they didn't design them to be displayed horizontally so they could be larger) and if you click on the pictures (with the idea they might be displayed in a bigger size), interesting things happen.

Todd...I believe this is a Japanese (?) site. Often, there is an option to download the Japanese characters to a different language.

Yes, the site is quite graphic intensive. But, it's worth the wait to see the photos...GBK

Yes, the man or womans name is Fumio Kojima, in Tokyo. I looked up the sales invoice. Sorry, I don't have the email address however.

jbutler --

Must be time for me to get to my practicing -- suddenly I've got "Lullaby of Birdland" running through my head:

Fumio Kojima
S/he's the one
Who built that site
That's lots of fun . . .

Todd W. -- who's silly on Saturday (OK, every day).

Todd- My recall of Birdland is as a great alto sax solo. of course the cl is OK, but may have to do it without the large lip slurs!! Glenn - many-many Tks for finding and posting this GREAT web-site, of interest/comparisons/identification by our moderns back to our Early Clarinet collectors. I found several deserving close looks [are enlargements possible?] and have a few "similars". These pics are far superior to the French cl site as I recall. We should point this out frequently to our interested posters, great history and diversity is shown. YKS, Don

Gang...
Fumio is a great source for metal clarinets. Has an extensive collection and sells them throughout Asia and the Pacific rim. Prior to getting my SILVER KING I had contacted him regarding a SELMER 5 piece metal. HE HAD ONE! His price of $1800 dollars was way beyond me, but I must say, it was immaculate. His metal clarinets are in excellent if not pristine condition. He knows his stuff.
If you'd like his e-mail address, contact me. I have it.

John

I just went back to check the page again a little further and found the CLEAR Clarinets. I have never seen these before. Are the special order? They are odd and ghostly looking, but still attractive in a way. I realize that they would fill with condensation as you play, but they are still interesting.

Thank you for sharing this site GBK.

The clear clarinets are no longer avalible as a current production item. The Buffet model is a B12 made out of clear plastic. Occasionally found on Ebay, they usually go for $800 and up. I didn't know that Schrieber (sp.) marketed such an item. It would make sence, however, considering that they make the Buffet clarinets under E-12.

I once saw an old advertisment on the classic movie channel for DuPont, I believe, that had a piano, violins, string basses and clarinets made out of clear plastic type material.

I ment Schrieber made the E-12 and under.

At http://www.klezmer.de/D_Klezmer/D_Gruppen/D_Feidman/d_feidman.html, there's a picture of Giora Feidman playing what's probably a clear plastic E-12, a crystal mouthpiece and, I think a clear plastic Luyben ligature. Probably a Legere reed, too, for an all-clear setup. It's also the cover photo on one of his CDs.

The Metropolitan Museum in New York has a clear E-13 as part of its permanent collection. The fill in the engraving is gold, and the keys are gold-colored too (though probably not plated with real gold). An amazing sight.

The only problem I have with clear is the spit factor. I really prefer to not see saliva. But, oh so wonderful is Mr. Feidman!!!! If you haven't heard one of his recordings you really need to treat yourself!
