Idyllwild Summer camp

Hello all.

I will be going up to idyllwild summer camp in july for two weeks and would like to ask a few questions for any one that might have gone there in the past [Is any one from this bb going there this summer?].

How is the weather there? Are concerts performed outside at all? Ill be bringing my A and Bb; but, should I also bring my spare plastic Vito [or E-11?] in case something unfortunate happens to my good clarinets? I know it will be two weeks of hard work, but what actually does the symphony orchestra program include in terms of activities [do we get to have recitals or anything like that?]

Simon,

Why not try to get some of the answers to your questions directly from Idyllwild? Even if there are some alums on this board, sometimes things change from year to year. I'm sure that you have some contact numbers in the packet of information that you have from them.

You might want to bring your plastic clarinet if there will be outdoor concerts.

I went last year, and we didn't play any outside concerts. Spots in the Festival Orchestra are hard to get, usually 3-4 spots for about 30 clarinetists (the rest play in the band). The weather was on the warm side, and a couple of days it rained. A helpful tip: bring some soft reeds. The reeds that play well at lower elevations will be way too hard, and fuzzy, up in the mountains there. Trust me on this one.

Most nights there are chamber and solo recital programs, which are totally voluntary. If you have a solo piece prepared, it's always nice to perform it. (Those recitals are indoors, too.) The attitude is pretty casusal. You can put together your own chamber groups if you like, too. Rehearsals for the main ensembles are every day, followed by sectionals, and you play concerts on both weekends. Masterclasses take place in the afternoons, and we also had a nighttime master class last year with Yehuda Gilad. The clarinet faculty are all great and I had a wonderful time last summer. (I'm not sure yet if I'm going this summer--I think they have an overload of clarinets so I think any late applicants, like myself, are going to be put on a waiting list.)
