I was asking some friends about pieces that one of the orchestras near me played and they answered with two pieces but I couldn't figure out what they were online because I couldn't spell them right. So here are the two pieces and I'm spelling them the best I can but I know they're wrong. Rusilana and Ludmia something like that. Does anyone know what pieces they are???

There's an opera by the Russian composer Mikhail Glinka titled "Russlan and Ludmilla". The opera itself is rarely performed but the overture has plenty of sparkle and is a popular opener for symphony concerts.

I think Rusilana is one piece and Ludmia is another. I don't think they're related.

I have played the piece in question. Ken is correct. The overture is a delight to play.

Glinka is considered the founder of Russian nationalism. The beginning of Russian opera is generally thought of as starting with his work "A Life for the Tsar".
"Russlan and Ludmilla" (Glinka's second opera) further solidified the movement in its use of the melodies and rhythms of Russian folk songs, and a reaction against the dominance of Italian opera.
The genius of Glinka lies in the fact that he recognized and exploited the untapped possibilities of Russian folk music...GBK
