My fellow clarinetists....
I've started a new thread on alcohol abuse and playing your instrument because the "other" was so damned long, that no one "in their 'right mind' would ever sift through that many messages to get to the end.
With that said, let me inform you that right at this moment, I'm sitting here with my R-13 having a drink of whiskey between toots.
I find that a couple stiff drinks with a few beers, certainly relaxes the chops and increases creative sensitivily. exccuse me while I pour myself another....okay I'm black. Please don't do that for that reason.

It's a joke Mark, not a effort to open a new thread!

John--don't forget to swab your shotglass and wash your clarinet. Your posting was creative and humorous, but the real problem of alchohol abuse, on the serious side, is not so funny. Amused for the moment, but for the recapitualtion and finale........NOT.

In total accord with the others, and, if serious problems arise, the regrets will be many and the consequences sobering! I have never seen one advantage to drinking and playing and I am 75, but believe anyone who thinks drinking improves playing is sadly misled...we all care for our fellow musicians.

I am happy to be a recovering alcoholic. Five years, five months, and ten days of sobriety. Alcoholism is a tragedy for many people, both the afflicted and those around him/her. Unfortunately, it is--in some circles--a subject of poor humor exploited by the ignorant and the uncaring. Mr. Gibson's post illustrates this very well. Black, green, or purple . . . you're about as funny as a pad falling off. Chuck

Chuck --

Congratulations on your sobriety. May it continue unabated.

I agree that too often we have made light of alcohol overuse and abuse in our society and that it is not funny. However, the way I read john gibson's post is not that he is trying to get a cheap laugh, rather that he is using humor to make a serious point (one in the same vein as William and Dr. Mathias): overuse of alcohol does not a better player make, and in fact makes one a fool.

Good (sober) clarineting, everyone.

Once again...Todd understands my point. In a previous post he also
"got it". I'm a satirist, and as such bring real points to life using "real" situations, writings, etc. Good thing you guys aren't around me in person. I'd drive you to drink.
By the way....I've got a splitting headache....

John

Writing satire and having it recognised as such is much more difficult than it might seem. I read your post as a bad attepmt at humor, not satire.

My apology to you Mark. Not for the "satire" but for stealing a page from the book "Man on the Flying Trapeze" the biography of
W.C. Fields, in which he wrote an "identical" letter to drinking buddy Douglas Fairbanks in which he proceeded to get drunker and drunker. It was obvious that he was of sound mind when he wrote it.
It was an attempt by the man to show the "funny" side of getting drunk. But then again we all know there was nothing funny about W.C. Fields. He was a fluke. Like many clarinetists. Pete Fountain. Benny Goodman. Artie Shaw. Eddie Daniels. Richard Hawkins. Ricardo Morales. Gregory Smith. AND the biggest fluke of them all....Acker Bilk.

Seriously. My Dad died of alcohol poisoning, yet I retained a sense of humor. Perhaps you should too. Maybe re-read the post Mark for what it is. Humor.

I studied Spanish literature in college and critics have a very hard time agreeing on what the writer of a piece of literature intended, if anything, so there is no reason why we on the BB should agree on a writer's intentions. I understood John's post the way he say's he meant it to be taken, so I should get an A+, but the professor probably thinks he is making a statement about the awful state of the English language in today's society, so I will only get a C.

BTW Chuck - Congratulations! Keep up the good work! I know it is very hard thing to overcome.

I'm with John. Surprised of lack of humor in replies. Is this bboard supposed to be @!#$-serious? Goodbye then. Is it forbidden to have fun in clarineting? Thanks John for the biggest laugh in this week. Today I'm off net for 5 weeks, summer vacation. Have a nice summer everybody, specially ron b and Bob.

John,
Out of context it's not all that funny. And even in context it's not all that funny.

"But the drinking accelerated rapidly to the level of consuming at least one quart of liquor a day. His battles, in hospitals and out, with delirium tremens were well known in the business. He remained magnificently unrepentant, however, observing at one point: ''It's hard to tell where Hollywood ends and the D.T.'s begin.''"

Great, so we've finally got Acker Bilk in the same class as Benny Goodman.
