Reading the second one, I found Goodman actually (my have) played Buffet adjusted by Moennig.

I believe a Centered Tone for quite a few years and the gigs that were classical possilbly a Buffet. Also he seemed to Barrels that looked like Booseys on a number of photos.

I was just searching ebay for goodman stuff and came across an ad of Benny advertising for Selmer. Given his reputation as a tightwad they may not be the best indication of whether he really played one or just wanted the money. I also recall bidding on a BG Selmer ligature last fall.

Like Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman played different brands, occassionally. However, his main instrument of choice was the Selmer.

Benny Goodman used at least four different clarinets at various stages of his career. He used a Selmer Balanced Tone, a Selmer Centered Tone, a Boosey and Hawkes 1010, and even (briefly) a Buffet.The Buffet is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the musical instrument collection...GBK

In the biography of Mr. Goodman entitled Swing, Swing, Swing, there is a photograph of one of Benny's favorite clarinets and it is indeed a Selmer. GBK is correct on the others he used.

I recall reading somewhere that he began with a Selmer and if true perhaps he had a sentimental attachment. Haha...on the tightwad comment; it's legendary

He had a mid- 50s Buffet R-13 that is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's musical instruments room. It's the same model from about the same time as my clarinet.

A musician who played with Benny Goodman late in his career told me that Benny carried his Buffet in a Selmer case. Perhaps he still had a contractual obligation?

No matter what the sound Goodman produced was his sound, yet I feel that the Selmer sound in the 30s was part of creating that remarable fluidity and roundness of color whick one associates with his artistry. I saw him play in 47 and it was a Selmer he had on the gig with the big band...and boy did he put on a show!

I also have a B G book, Sels yes, I can see why with my CT and a "similar" [unmarked] CT?. Welcome to the BB, Dr J M . Digging thru my files [boxes!] I found a March 1949 "Woodwind Magazine" [4 pgs] with an interview w: Artie, "No Categories Please" and a pic with Hershy Kay and Walter Hendl. Its just philosophy and vague future plans, no horn talk! I enjoy these discussions about our old heroes. Don

Diz, I care. I don't have much else to do actualy. Well there is work and the girlfriend, but in my music world the horn matters!! I'd be very interested to know what period Benny was playing the 10-10. I only wish there were more 10-10's around, I'd love to pick one up. I play on a 2-20 which had the design ssistance of R. Keel, whom Benny studied with. I've read there is a 4-20 out there but have never seen one. I realy like they key work on my horn.
A note that I have been pondering is on Artie Shaw, who is my favorite clarinet player. His last recordings in the 50's with a small band are the ultimate testiment of his amazing abilty on the clarinet. In the liner notes of the "Self Portrait" box set he says he switched to a Buffet (for the small group) from Selmer which he always used in the big bands. I have seen pics of him with a Conn as well. The Buffet he recorded with would have to be a pre R13, because the last recording he made was in 54. His sound on those recordings kill me. Very open and flowing but very quiet as you can hear the pads slapping down.
I'm 32 now, when I was 22 I found Arties number and called him just for fun. In so many words he told me to F-off. He should be 92 this year, and I'm sure he would say the same thing to me. Oh well....
