 Making a clarinet lamp....
Author: Bb
Date:   2002-06-15 20:01

We (my family) are moving and I want to decorate my new room with clarinet stuff. And I really wanted to make a clarinet lamp. I already have an idea how to make one, but were should I buy a REALLY old(or unplayable) clarinet??? I was thinking about buying a little Eb, since it's smaller(and of course, CUTER!!!)but I'm thinking that it'll be hard to find one. Any ideas????

Thanks!!!

Try pawn shops, antique shops, garage sales or Ebay. People complain that most of the clarinets on Ebay are junk; that's good for you.

Do a search of this board, there was quite a controversy about this some time ago.

My Clarinet lamp is made from a Peddler that has a broken tenon joint. No clarinets were harmed in the making of the lamp. I bought a ten dollar lamp that had a shade and base that I liked, discarded the middle, and used long threaded lamp-pipe pieces to tie the thing together. As a bonus, the light socket is black plastic, and about the size of a mouthpiece, so it's in proportion. If I ever need the clarinet as a clarinet, it will all come apart without harm.

I actually borrowed a part from the lamp once (a key), and put it back when I was finished, so it's a good parts holder, too.

I had an old Amati that had so many broken springs and bent keys and bad pads that it was worth more to repair it than it was to buy a Buffet! I also had a lamp base to a broken lamp and some leftover outlet wire. Using what I had, I managed to make a serviceable clarinet lamp with a beautiful decorative base. Now all I need is a lampshade to match my room...

Im with Bob. Horse Pucky! Pay attention to what you are doing, get informed, ask questions, then bid what you can afford--not what you get forced to bid by shills.

I got the Amati off ebay... but then I got my clarinet that I play now off there too. It's all in your care and what you're looking for. (Or what your parents are looking for...)

High impact plastic might serve the purpose. Why not metal?

No problem.
get a lamp kit from any hardware store,
get either a wood round larger than your bell
to attach the kit to, and to feed the wire.
(you may have to add cheap plastic pads for
clearance for the wire.)

1. paint the wood round black, or whatever
you wish.
2. drill a hole big enough for the center
rod from the kit into the round.
3. put rod through the round, attach with
furnished nut.
4. assemble clarinet, put over the rod.
5. choose if you wish to use the mouthpiece as
the finial (epoxy to stock finial) or under the
light bulb (drill a hole straight up from bottom,
tricky without a drill press)
6. finish assembling per instructions on the lamp
kit.
7. finished!

works fine, I put the mouthpiece below the lamp,
took a while to get the angle through the roof
of the mouthpiece right.

Many, Many compliments.

Hey- I got my clarinet off ebay! I was just saying that I've heard a lot of people whine that the only things on ebay are unplayable, awful, etc. IMHO, they don't know where to look. There's nice stuff, but it's easy to find worthless junk, too.
