 Stolen clarinet
Author: Mark G. Simon

On Wed. June 12 a clarinet was stolen from my car in Ithaca New York. This is a Selmer Series 10 (in Bb), serial no. V7216. It was in a light-weight, soft fabric, black case of the sort designed to hold lap-top computers. (most likely the culprit thought she was taking a computer). Also in the case were 2 mouthpieces: a Vandoren B-40 and Gregory Smith "Old Chedeville no. 1", a Kooiman thumb rest, a pocket metronome. In a flap in front was an envelope holding some lesson coupons with my name on them.

If you see this clarinet, if someone tries to sell you this instrument please contact me.

On the pull down menu on this page there is a section for listing stolen instruments. You would need to send Mark a copy of the police report. Good luck - I hope it is recovered...GBK

Sorry to hear your instrument was stolen. I hope you get it back! Nothing like not having your clarinet to relax and enjoy with.

IMHO, jenna, that's a little quick to draw, isn't it? Most people DO say "he" or "he or she" or "they", after all, which isn't exactly sexist, just hasty writing on their part?

Keep checking your local pawn shops (as if you have'nt already thought of this, but in case you didn't). Or take a walk and listen for really bad clarineting. Seriously, you might also visit your local school band rooms to see if any student clarinetist has recently been given a "deal" on a "new instrument." Also music stores, musical instrument repair shops, newspaper ads, etc. Most likely, the person will want to liquidate the clarinet for cash and is there that the instrument will most likely be found. Hope you find it.

Check Ebay for anything familiar. I hope you get it back!

(I live very close to Ithaca- small world, isn't it? I'll keep an eye out for it.)

Thanks to everyone for their comments. It embarrasses me to no end to have to report having my clarinet stolen, because it reflects negatively on my responsibility to hang on to valuable property. (sigh).

The circumstances are these: I went to a self-serve car wash with the intention of vacuuming out my car. I parked next to the vacuum machine and went to get change. A car pulled up on the other side of the machine and a woman got out and started vacuuming her car. I started with the trunk, and so removed the clarinet, and a lot of junk that was back there, and put them all in the back seat. I was busy with the trunk when I heard the woman's car pull away. I didn't notice the clarinet was missing until a couple of hours later, when I decided it was time to practice. I had no reason to be suspicious of her at the time, and still think that if she stole it she had to have been very deft and very quick to get across the concrete island with all the vacuum machinery, get into the back seat and snatch the clarinet without leaning on the car, which would have shifted the weight and tipped me off that someone was in there. Perhaps she had an accomplice, a young child hiding until the right moment then getting out and doing the dirty work.

Pretty fantastic tale, isn't it? I don't have a better explanation though, and the clarinet is definitely not there. At no time did I put anything on the ground while I was emptying the trunk. Any other explanation I could come up with would have to involve alien abduction or parallel universes.

One more thing: I would advise any of those who responded here to check your computers for the Klez virus. I just got it (it's in quarantine)

The Klez virus did not come from this machine.

Mark G.: There was an incident in the Chicago area within the last year where a woman put her infant(harnessed in its child seat) on top of the car and then pulled onto the highway forgetting the child. The kid-in-seat fell onto the highway but was miraculously seen and saved by an oncoming truck driver. Just a thought...you didn't happen to put your horn on the roof did you?
