 trashed contrabass clarinets?
Author: Farfl

Hi;
Does anyone on this forum know of any schools that might have some beyond-repair trashed EEb LeBlanc paperclip-style contra alto clarinets? Anyone know of any repair shops that might have one of these hanging on their wall as a beyond-hope decoration?
Best Regards,
Farfl

Farfl -

If you're hoping to find a squashed Leblanc BBb and hammer it into shape, fahgeddaboutit. The're all glommed up at school excess auctions, modestly restored and sold at high prices on eBay. Both my Selmer Eb and my Leblanc paperclip BBb ended their school lives as road kill and had to have extensive restoration. This is mostly because of the astronomical prices of new ones. A new Leblanc paperclip BBb to low C lists for over $20,000.

Still -- good luck.

An EEb Leblanc as you described sold yesterday on eBay for US$541.99.

Contra Altos don't seem to command as high a price as the Contra Basses. Having said that, the $541.99 is a tad low, even for an eBay instrument in as rough shape as this one. A lot of time, patience, and money are going to have to go into restoring that one. Still a good bargain if it comes out decent.

I appreciate all the responses to the post, those made publicly on the bulletin board, and those that were e-mailed to me privately.
One person mentioned that he thought there were several keys missing on the instrument, but I can't see that from the photos - anyone know which keys they are, so that I might try and obtain them in advance?

Also, I now have someone ready to attempt to create an alternate bell if we don't want to order a new one from LeBlanc. So, I'd like to ask you on the board for some help. Could anyone help us out with some measurements of an EEb contra alto LeBlanc paperclip bell? We need the length, the width of the bell flare, and the width of the neck "tenon" that goes into the instrument.
I'd appreciate any measurements that anyone can provide!
Appreciatively,
Steven

Is that really a EEb contra? It looks like a BBb (without a bell).
