Did John Cage write a sonata for clarinet? If so what does anyone no about it, is it very difficult? I am after a modern work for a recital in about 4 months time and i thought this may work.

It's a solo sonata.

3 movements 1: vivace 12/8 time most difficut. It has a few tough (and arcane) 16th note passages but do-able. 2: lento very easy. 3: vivace 4/4 time (mostly), fast but nothing hair raising. One thing I found difficult getting used to, was the fact that accidentals only applied to the note directly after them. I have to say I never really understood (or even liked the piece), Its nothing like "Glassworks" if thats what your thinking. I did it for a Jury ages ago, One of judges sole comment was "Well you hit all the notes"

Hope you enjoy it more than I.

Fred

John Cage and clarinet? To me it's like chalk scratching a blackboard. I know there are people who appreciate what John Cage wrote. I lack the ability to appreciate what John Cage wrote.

For your information RMK i have heard many and studied quite a few works of John Cage. I have studied his prepared piano music and his concerto for prepared piano and chamber orchestra.

Don't patronise me.

Try Sonatina by Horowitz, written for Gervase de Peyer. Off beat, jazzy, recognisable music with a twist, and the Lento is just exquisite.
