What basic tools are commonly used to measure mouthpieces? and where are they available?
Thanks.

In 2001 Ferree's began offering again the Mouthpiece Refacing Kit.
Per page 67 of their 2001 catalog:
It consists of a glass Direct Reading Gauge, a taper gauge and five feeler gauges - sizes .0015, .010, .024, .034 and .050.
The kit includes an instruction booklet which walks you through the various stages.
Their catalog advises, "This work is an art. Practice is perfection. It is suggested you read and reread the booklet before starting your work".
The kit is catalog number L37 and lists for $180.00

This topic was discussed quite some time ago on the Klarinet list. Without looking in the catalogs, I think the Mouthpiece Refacing Kit sold by Ferree's (and perhaps also by the Woodwind and Brasswind) is the Morgan kit. At the time, it was discussed on the Klarinet list, a couple of posters suggested that it was rather pricey for what you get. If you search the Klarinet Archives on:

"mouthpiece feeler gauge fobes"

and

"mouthpiece feeler gauge behn"

without the quotes, you will find a recommended list of the specific tools you might want to start with from Clark Fobes, a noted mouthpiece maker, and phone numbers for Morgan and Babbitt. When the messages appeared, the cost of putting your own kit together from Babbitt was only a little more than half the amount Ferree's was charging.

BTW, reading through some of Clark's other posts, I am amazed at the wealth of information he has provided over the years -- some very interesting reading.

Best regards,
jnk
