Hi, I got a kinda silly question. Say you have a reed and it smells, lets say it smells like cheese, is any way to get rid of it cause it really doesn't smell all that great. I would just throw it out but it's a new reed and I can't bear to throw out a brand new reed! So any sugestions would be apreciated! Thanks!

Put the reed in hydrogen peroxide , for a half an hour!!!

how did it get to smell that way? well I ate cheese just prior to playing. So I know not to do that again!

never buy used reeds nor a clarinet from a smoker or some one who eats a lot of cheese.

Quite a change from German vs French problems. Maybe you could use the reed to catch mice. I do like the idea of soaking in denture cleaner, however, which should also be a good way to clean mouthpieces.

Leaving a reed in sterident overnight will get rid of any nasty
smells and often gives a new lease of life to the reed.
The same treatment is good for cleaning mouthpieces but does tend
to dull the glaze on them.
If it still smells cheesy,you can blame any sqeaks on mice!!

Lesson learned by this thread - clean your teeth before you play your clarinet - it's common sense (or at least eat a crisp apple or gargle (sp?)).

Mu upper register is not working. Oh dear, there is a piece of apple inside the register tube!
I can get only 2 notes. Oh - apple under a side key pad again!
I once enquitred of Coca Colahow much sugar there is in coke. a very clever answer was, "Much the same as there is in fruit juice." Fructose to feed the bacteria that live in the reed? (The same bacteria that live on teeth and produce acid waste that manages to break down tooth enamel?)
Your apple may be a mixed blessing!

I agree on the brushing before playing. If you use a colored mouthwash you will find the color coming out the end opposite the tip proving that the reed is composed of hollow tubes. Yeh,any sugar probably encourages mildew too.
