So my son did not make the top band this year at his high school. Three kids left and they only let one kid in. There's some speculation that the teacher's saving spots for two of his top kids who decided not to take band as seniors. He may be hoping to change their minds. Or maybe he thinks my boy is not good enough.
They thought very highly of him at his youth orchestra audition and he got a "command performance" at the solo and ensemble competition, one of four or five from the whole school. (with three big bands full of kids)
He really needs to be in a better band, the intonation in the second band stinks and he finds the music unchallenging.
I'm a little put out for the other really good clarinetist at the school who also failed to get in.

Always an interesting gambit to quit outright the school band and seek performance experience elsewhere.

Sometimes you can find a community band that plays at a fairly high level. Your son may also have the opportunity to play with older, more experienced musicians. This can't hurt. Of course, you will find politics everywhere.

Private lessons can't hurt, but you need to perform in a group or many different types of groups in order to gain experience. Playing in different types of groups also helps you learn how to play different styles of music.

Just what my oldest daughter did 4 years ago. She successfully auditioned for the Greater Dallas Youth Orchesta and played with this group through high school. A much better experience for her...as she thought marching band was a big waste of time.

Hat- my youth orchestra requires that you play in your school group. My school orchestra's lousy but I play violin in it instead for more of a challenge (there's no rule you have to play the same instrument in youth orchestra as your school group).
