 cleaning old wooden mouthpiece

I bought an old 5-keyed clarinet on ebay. Assuming it is not a fake, it was made in London between 1798 and 1814. It came with an intact long tenoned, black wood mouthpiece. The clarinet is in playable condition, so I want to play it. I would like to clean the mouthpiece a bit....original or not, it is very dirty. Does someone have some experience in this who could advise me about cleaning it without doing damage to it? How best to preserve the boxwood clarinet wood, too? I would appreciate comments or sources.

All you need is a small soft toothbrush, double tipped cotton swab Oil Soap and warm water. Wash it and then apply olive or vegetable oil. There is better oil for wood, but you do not want it in your mouth.

Vytas: thanks. I talked to someone who restores art work and does old instruments as a hobby. He suggested using 0000 steel wool and odorless mineral spirits, but I like your solution better.

You do not want any material removed from the lay, facing or the inside of your mouthpiece. I would avoid using steel wool. Mineral spirits are fine, but not the best cleaning solution....V
