Recently, I was able to pick up a copy of the CD Blue Rondo with Karl-Heinz Steffens. I also recently bought several of the newly released CDs featuring the Berlin Philharmonic with Abbado doing the Beethoven cycle of symphonies. After finding no luck by searching on the internet, I am curious to know if Steffens is the solo chair clarinetist in these recordings. The recordings came out just recently, and I know that he recently joined the orchestra after having performed in Munich. If it was not him, would anyone know who did play in these?

I studied in berlin last year at the karajan academy, and the Philharmoniker was actually finishing the Beethoven cycle when I was there. I know that Wenzel Fuchs played solo clarinet on most of the recordings because Karl Heinze Steffens did not join the orchestra until March of last year. Hope this helps..........

I am a great admirer of the Berlin Phil section and think they are the finest in the world...however thats open to debate... but I love that focus on the sound!
