 CAS

CAS= "Clarinet Aquisition Syndrome." This is a difficult to treat syndrome consisting of irresistible urges to acquire expensive ligatures, mouthpieces, and clarinets. Most HMOs do not cover the costs of treatment. Any suggestions?

Have kids. Your disposable income will vanish. You will no longer be able to acquire ANYTHING expensive. Works for me!

Have kids!!! But keep your wife working to provide adequate dispoable income. Buy everything expensive that your clarinetting requires--or thinks it does--and be prepared for the doubling of the entries on your daily "Honey Do" list. Worked for me!!!! Good Clarineting!!!!! (isn't CAS fun)

CAS is a mental health problem, and most HMOs don't cover mental health very much.

Let your husband buy the Harley-Davidson he's always wanted. And then spend away! What can he possibly say?!

Buy a boat, clarinet stuff seems cheap in comparison.

Help your partner to aquire an equally expensive hobby ,you then won't have to justify that swishy new lig or your third box of different reeds this month.(I found getting my better half interested in in slot care racing worked a treat!

Get into the game full time. Everything is cheaper, unbeatable life style, great salary. You will only ever have what you are playing or what you want to sell. The instrument/brand etc. becomes irrelevant after a while it just needs to work on a gig.

Have childdren (or not). Tell your spouse you are preparing for a post-retirement career in clarinet reconditioning/resale. Occasionally promise to sell something. Even less occasionally, actually sell something.

Best regards,
jnk

David,

Perhaps too many Malerne's? ;^)

You must free yourself (and your spouse) of the absurd capitalist notion that you must make a reasonable profit on each (occasional) sale. Or, incorporate playing for money into your scheme so that the cost of acquired toys becomes deductible.

Best regards,
Jack

Dave, you must remind your wife that each purchase of a R.Malerne bass means a new potential cuaomer for some of the finest reconditioning available and much, much more interesting than purchasing hay for the horses and donkey--which provide no return, unless you are into "trickle down" gardening.

wjk: It is my belief that the insidious effect of instructors drives so many players into CAS. You know, first they tell you, "well, too bad you spect $1785 for that instrument, because the mouthpiece is a piece of junk." And you are led to the Instructor's mouthpiece, which is of course some slow-grown crystalline quartz thing that hasn't been made since 1934. But wow, does it sound great! Then the reeds, which must be hand made from donax grown in that single remarkably fertile area of Tierra Del Fuego where "the best stuff" grows. And of course a ligature which is either $87.50 or is a 57 cent shoestring (either is better, depending on... well, you know). The basic problem? You've just gone too "high hat."

My suggestion is to dump that instructor you have 'way out in the Hamptons and get one from Jersey City, who might not be so blasted superb, but at least he will be able to teach you how to play something instead of just teaching you how to buy unbelievably expensive stuff.

Regards,
John

And if you get the Vandoren Optimum, the cap is almost as much as the ligature.

What a VUNDERBAHR group of posts, I almost didn't read till now!! I generally subscribe to Jack's and Dave's approach to finding funding [a poet who didn't intend it!] for forays into the "jungle" [EBAY and pawn shops] for "diamonds in the rough". In addition to promoting "business" halousinations [sp?] with the BW, I stress the public service delusion and the "build-up the assets for our children in our estate" belief. Collecting is FUN X 3+.
