I have an idea from another string of postings below (re: Festival Clarinet). Hopefully, the results can be educational for the readers of this BBS.
Not putting any particular emphasis on chronological order, list as many of the career classical orchestra clarinetists that you can. Any classical orchestra in the world qualifies. The only rule is that the person has (or had) to be a career clarinetist (5 or more years) with a professional classical orchestra, not a career soloist. Jazz doesn't count, either.
I'm going to start the game and expose my lack of knowledge at the same time, but at least I'll be honest...
Best Known Career Classical Orhestra Clarinetist: Simeon Bellison, with 30 years in the New York Philharmonic as Principle Clarinetist. Approximate dates of career: 1920s to 1950s.
I seriously doubt if anyone would question putting Mr. Bellison at the top of this kind of list. Let me know if I got at least this one name, position, and approximate dates of the career right or wrong. However, hang in there and play the game with me for the readers of this BBS who are not frequent Klarinet list readers.
Just because some folks are (or were) popular, that doesn't qualify them for this type of list. For example, Benny Goodman doesn't count for this particular list. He specialized in jazz and as a soloist. Stolzman doesn't qualify because he is a soloist. Ditto for Eddie Daniels for the same reason.
The goal of this game is to pick up names of lesser known but fantastically gifted and experienced clarinetists from around the world.

Anthony Gigliotti was Principal of Phillidelphia from 1949-96.
Not sure of Stanley Drucker's dates.. but he's been there a while in New York.

Stanley Drucker has been in the NY Phil since he was 19 years old. I'm pretty sure he is going on 52 seasons with the Phil.

Daniel Bonade's name has to be included in the list of greats. Robert Marcellous (sp???), Mitch Laurie, the list could be endless.

Prefering quality to quantity, Robet Marcellus was Principal of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1953 -1973.
Harold Wright was Principal of the Boston Symphony from 1970 - 1996?
Clark Brody was Principal of Chicago from 1950 - 1978.
Louis DeSantis was for a short time Principal of the CBS and Philadelphia Orchestras in the 40's I believe before sliding his automobile into a lamp post on a snowy night at a very early age - killing him instantly.
Daniel Bonade was Principal in Philadelphia in the teens and 20's. Also Principal of the Cleveland Orchestra later - prior to Marcellus a few years.

(Robert Marcellus - Sp.) Mitchell Lurie (who was Principal Clarinet of the Chicago Symphony from 1947 - 1949) then Ignatius Gennusa became principal for one year before becoming Principal Clarinet of the Baltimore Symphony for over 20 years. All three students of Bonade.

hmmmm...
Cleveland: Marcellus, Johnson (eefer), Peterson (+sax), Zetzer(bs cl), Shifrin, Cohen, Nereim (bs cl) and a few others I forget, mostly recent cats, over the last 30+ years...I thing George Sifles (sp?), now principal in St Louis, was also in the section at one time, but he was principal keyboards before joela jones...

Paul, I count 18-19 great names, I want to add Keith Stein, and Elsa Verdhuer [sp?] both Mich State, Keith of my time period. I was [and am] just an engr, not a musician! Was glad to see Clark Brody mentioned, he and his younger brother James [a fine flutist] both of Lansing, Jim in all of our high school and MSU bands/orchs that I was!! Ah , memories! Have you ever heard of Burt Hara? Principle Clar. of Minnesota Orchestra. He is a very fine player, highly creative, unique, and an enthusiastic teacher. I think he also plays with the Philadelphia orchestra as co-principle or something... ummm he is known for his beautiful tone and sensitvity. I know he went to Curtis Institute for BM.
