Any one familiar with Jimmy Giuffre's trio performances with guitarist Jim Hall? I was very impressed with Giuffre's playing. Does anyone know why he could not play in upper registers?

I'm sure he could play upper register but didn't. He was basically a sax player (Woody Herman) and picked up the clarinet after several years away from it. When he made his first recordings on clarinet in the '60s (I recall) he didn't think he had mastered the clarion register. Also, there was a prejudice in some circles against the clarinet as a jazz instrument, but his low register playing won acceptance. Yes, I know, there were fine jazz clarinetists, but the feeling at the time was that high notes were unpleasant.

Jimmy was a Lester Young disciple (as were most the Woody Herman reedmen of his generation) and you can get some insights from listening to Lester's few (rare) recordings on clarinet.

You can also see Jimmy in action with his trio, and opposite Pee Wee Russell on "The Sound of Jazz" a TV show taped live in December 1957.

My CD of Giuffre involves high notes and clarion register. No avoidance of these registers at all.

He had the good sense to use a Berg Larsen Tenot mouthpiece too. Go the bullet.
