a while back i purchased a couple of boxes of these- worked on a box, had some success, changed mouthpieces, worked on another box, had more success....
last night i did a recording gig, played 1st clarinet for a contemporary opera (with about 3 days to learn the part, ouch!)... used a "For our Friends" #3.5 on a Zinner refaced to be "sort of like" a 5RVLyre.....
i was very pleased- i hadn't done much work at all on the reed, the one i used was about average "out of the box" with just a bit of touching up, it wasn't the "one in a million".... and it played really well from 4pm until 11.30pm at night. Soft/Loud/high/low fast tounging etc..... really quite nice.
just my experience- i've also reccently opened boxes of GC Thick Blank, Evolution, VAndoren classic and Zonda.... and look at it this way, i didn't feel motivated to rave about them and certainly didn't choose to do a recording on them....

Donald - are these outrageously pricey (considering the NZ dollar is even crappier than its Aussie cousin)?

My own experience has also been favorable. The Davie Cane people are really nice to deal with and you get a sense that they are really trying to please by giving us more than one good reed per box! I've play tested both the Gonzalez and Mozart reeds from Davie Cane (about 2 boxes each) in the last several months and they were 80+ percent good playable reeds with better than average life spans. Definately worth a trial.

In addition to their reeds, which I also liked, I have found their cane in tube form to be very good in making my own reeds. My specific cane needs were taken serioulsy by Mr. Gonzalez and I've been very happy with the results.
