Bore oil is supposed to be put inside your clarinet to keep the wood from drying out and cracking with is a very bad thing!!!i believe your supposed to do it at least once a month but more if it's outside alot(like marching band)which when i'm in marching band i usually put some on the outside too.If you not sure how to go about this prossess either let me know on this b.b. or take it to a repair/instrument shop and they'll do it for you.Hope this helps!

I believe you're wrong - once a month is way too often if you oil. Perhaps once every six months or so. Please consult a reputable technician (generally not a music store salesman) in your area to find out what your local norm is, if any.

Once a month is not necessary. Do a search on the BB and I believe you will find plenty of reading for the weekend.

FYI, a bore is simply a hole, usually a long one(or deep, if you prefer) oft times in a cylindrical object (like a clarinet!) It is made with a boring machine, which is just a high capacity, very accurate, often horizontal, drill press.

As usual lots of opinions on oiling. I recently queried a friend who has been playing for 20 some years and he says he has never oiled or had anyone oil his clarinets...and has never had a crack.
Personally, I still am of the opinion that a wood clarinet should have the wood "maintained" just as any other fine old piece of wood furniture. Also, I don't see why frequent oiling would be harmful...if done intelligently i.e. so as not to damage the pads.
Just one man's opinions.

A top recorder (blockflute) maker once told me that recorders saturated in oil had a compromised tone. Perhpas tone CAN be compromised.
As Mark wrote, do a search on bore oil. There is HEAPS of info in this forum already.

If snooty means to correct misinformation ... then let me be snooty. Perhaps you might read up on the information provided here instead of just guessing about answers.

Monica you've got quite a cheek to come here and be so up yourself to Mr Charrette.
If it were not for the enormous effort he has made in establishing and maintaining this place for people like you and I, you and I would not be here.
Can you not understand that he does make some effort to keep garbage statements highlighted for what they are. It woulds be a shame to have archived material misleading naive visitors like yourself into the future....

Casey,
Assemble your clarinet omitting the mouthpiece. Hold the instrument with the bell facing some light source. Look through your clarinet from the barrel end. What you are looking through is the *bore* of your clarinet.
Best,
-=[Joe Vacc]=-

Steven - get over it, he's had a bite at me too, but then I deserved it. I still love him (purely plutonic, of course).

lesson learned by this thread - pick UP your dictionaries - they're the dusty tomes on your bookshelves - and READ them.
notice the entry for "bore" as the noun - NOT the verb
lesson two learned - DON'T give Mark angst - if you don't like his attention to detail then you're NOT learning anything - in which case, go back to your comic books, they'd certainly be more appropraite reading.
As Eddie once said (AbFab) "in with anger out with love"

Casey,
excellent question, many supercilious responses.
There are some academic papers that will explain it for you.
One is at "http://www.naylors-woodwind-repair.com" click on
"publications" One warning, you will become informed.
Charette disclaimer: Last year I bartered my assistance
on Mr. Naylor's website for a full rebuild with organic
oil immersion. I am very happy, am but no longer associated
with the web site or Mr. Nayler, other than purchases
of his products.

(A late entry -- can't get to all the threads as fast as they appear; have to wait for the boss to go home.)
