If any of you great BBoarders are living near Austin, Texas and can lend a hand filling up a moving truck next Monday and Tuesday evenings your help would be most appreciated. I'm moving back to Detroit after seeking (and losing!) my fortune in Texas. A new job awaits me in Detroit - as does my family ;^)
Drop me a line at charette@woodwind.org if you can help out.

Mark - if it wasn't for the tyranny of distance ... oh, and Jaarvi at the helm of the Detroit Symphony - wow, I'm jealous.

Yeah...but Jarvi will be with the DSO (as music director) only through the 2004-05 season.
The search continues.....

Jaarvi and the Detroit are playing some of the best I've heard in recent years. Too bad they're not putting enough of it on cds. Best of luck Mark and sorry I'm not around Austin. Leave the cowboy boots behind

Larry, did the recording fiasco that Jaarvi had with Chandos ever get straightened out?

Actually, they're not putting any of it on CD's. However, the DSO does have the largest radio syndication network of any US orchestra (at this time, anyway) and broadcasts 26 programs each year. Personally, I'd rather hear it "live" than the other (but that's me...).
Chandos basically cancelled their contract w/Jarvi several years ago already after he publically castigated them: he wished to do more of the "standard" (translation: Germanic) repertoire and Chandos said no way. He complained, they fired him. Any Jarvi/DSO recordings that may hit the streets now would be self-produced (such as the last "Encores Live" CD).
With Jarvi stepping down as MD, there's a possibility of something happening in the near future, CD-wise.
Stay tuned.....

Jarvi was doing so nicely with the recordings by the DSO of some of the lesser-known but very good works (the names escape me and my CDs are packed up right now). I bought CDs by Jarvi & the DSO for that very reason. I've got plenty of recordings of the others ...
I thought it was a shame that he stepped out of that niche and wanted to record the "standards" yet again.
