 Insurance for musical instruments
Author: Gary
Date:   2002-05-23 16:54

I'm trying to insure my instruments, but I don't know which companies are good (I'd rather not just surf the Web and pick one) nor do I know where they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary

Clarion is good, but be warned: they will not insure an instrument for breakage for anyone under 21.

Some of the best insurance is to be careful with the instrument. One should never leave an instrument in a auto when you are not there. At home, a dead bolt locked closet is a good idea for storage and a locked room door will also slow up burglars. Burglars, however, are often not interested in instruments as they know that they are risky to sell. A very common situation is where the owner leaves the instrument on a bench or on a restaurant seat or some place where it can be simply picked up and taken. Good luck!

Gary,

I think a good place to start would be with your household insuror. You may very well already have some (limited) coverage on your instrument(s) if you aren't playing them professionally (e.g., theft from your house). You can also usually purchase more comprehensive coverage as a rider and it might be less expensive than a stand-alone policy from someone else. If you are using the instruments professionally, see if you can pick up a copy of the AFM newsletter/magazine, I seem to recall a company that advertised specific instrument coverage there when I used to get it. Weigh the costs against the likelihood that you will have to make a claim.

Best regards,
jnk

Jack is right, insurance is much different depending on whether or not you play professionally (that is, for money.)

For those NOT playing professionally, most homeowners companies will "schedule" (on a rider) your instruments for an additional premium. (If you are not a homeowner, a tennants policy should do the same.) Check with your agent for coverages, but doing so usually eliminates any upper limit on payout as well as possibly eliminates the deductable. It will also usually cover accidental loss (losing the instrument) and will cover them away from home. You will need to supply either a bill of sale or an apraisal for each covered instrument.

We have such a rider on an R13, and a student Selmer alto sax, it costs less than $20/ yr.

(Other personal property can also be scheduled. Common examples include jewlery, furs, art, stamp collections etc.)

USAA covers all musical instruments (not professionally used) at not extra charge!
