Ia anyone familiar with the Selmer signet 100 clarinet? The one I play is from 1974. Would a Buffet R-13 have better tone/playability?

Probably, depending on the R 13's age/serial #, which has been much-discussed here. "Search the Phorum" for info re: both the Signet and R13, and bear in mind that the the Sig is an "intermediate" while the R13 is a "pro" clarinet[ costing maybe twice as much. Don

Yes. Alot clarinetists in my school band have them. They seem to be preety good (and popular)horns(Although i have never played one). They have a good tone tone, similar to my E11 IMO.

There has been much on his board over the years on the Selmer Signet line. Try this thread:

http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=22441&t=22426

There were 3 Signets, the 100 was the lowest, the "Special" was in the middle and the "Soloist" was the highest.

I own the Special I bought new in 1969. As stated, it is a decent intermediate horn. My son has an R13. When he had a Bundy, he asked to borrow the Special, now he doesn't!

In my opinion (and his) the R13 is significantly better in both tone and playability as well as in "feel."

That said, the Special is most competant, and I can't destroy it! It even spent a dozen of the years I laid off from playing in an unheated attic at the sea shore. (I knew better, but I didn't care at that point.) It has been overhauled once. I play it in a community band.

When I get done buying my son instruments, and paying for college 4 years from now, I'll treat myself to an R13.
