You might want to check out Andre Jolivet's music, as I find it similar to Varese in certain ways. He wrote a wonderful piece for unaccompanied clarinet entitled Asceses.

I think I heard something called 'tuning up' which was pretty interesting. A composition based on the 'theme' of an orchestra tuning up.

I think Ionisation for percussion has an amazing part for the siren and the woodblocks are cool too!
