Hey gang...or I shold say Aloha Bro's....
Am back from a week in Hawaii...Hilo and Kona....the big island...
clarinets survived well....and sounded great from the porch(lanai) in the wilds of my sons ranch/farm in Hilo. Which by the way looks over the ocean.
I'd never been to Hawaii...and thought I'd never leave.
While there last Sunday, the Hawaii county band played a concert in the town square. They were really good. Maybe 40 members strong...
8 clarinetists...all with wooden horns...couple buffets...a leblanc or two....couldn't tell the rest...but they all did well....
Only thing this soputhwesterner missed was Mexican food and jalepenos....The islanders just don't understand that aspect of life yet....but the seafood gumbo my daughter in law prepared made up for it....
I know, I should get back to clarinet talk...uh....Just heard from Steve Fowler in Maryland....he overhauled my SILVER KING and made a new double walled barrel for it....says it's done and plays very well....I should have it back home mid-week.....Can't wait....
Thanks for letting me ramble...
John

Welcome back! I was on the Big Island for 9 days in April. I took my clarinet with me but only practiced one time while I was there. There too many mai tais and black sand beaches to see while on the island. Can't wait to go back. I spent 5 nights on the Kona side and 3 on the Hilo side. I loved the laid-back pace of the island. No hurries. BTW, there is supposed to be a decent Mex/SW restaurant in Hilo. Can't remember the name of it right now. Had too much loco moco and malasadas so my brain's mush.

The Big Island sure is nice ... I spent 10 days at the Royal Waikaloan many years ago for an ANSI meeting. Rented a motor scooter to get around the island. You could tell I was happy by checking the bugs stuck in my teeth ;^)

You know it really is nice. The big island isn't as touristy as the others...especially on the Hilo side...the malasadas for those who don't know are the islands answer to krispy kremes....
and loco moco...well...let's just say...it's not what you eat if you're on a diet...
I am looking forward to going back. (someday) Todd...I took both wooden clarinets and played only twice in 7 days...spent too much time looking at nature....
Mark...I hope the bugs are gone by now....
