I actually got a splinter in my upper lip once which infected. Has anyone out there had similar stories to tell...clarinet playing does have its dangers.

Never a splinter, but whenever I play the bass clarinet the peg ends up slipping and the mouthpiece hits me in the face. It's even worse when you are marching and that happens.

I have had a reed splinter too. Ouch, on my lower lip. I sand the top a little more now.

Stay away from those 10 cent reeds, use the 25 cent reeds instead.

Got one yesterday afternoon from a Vandoren V16 Tenor reed. They cost me a good deal more than 25 cents.
I saw for the first time this motning a couple of boxes of J. Michael clarinet reeds. They have got to be better than their instruments.

3M Micropore tape on the reed where your lower lip contacts it should prevent any splinters from touching your lip.

I've sat here for ten minutes trying to visualize how that could ever happen. Please explain. It might even make an item for Humour in Reader's Digest. How long of a "peg stake" are you using that it can hit the ground while you are marching?

I too have been hit in the face by a bass clarinet, and a saxophone (it swung up on the neck strap). Not only did the bass clarinet hurt, but it also broke my best reed.

Ok, I use the peg only when I am sitting! The peg would slip and the bass clarinet would swing (still on the neckstrap) and hit my face.
For marching I would just use a neckstrap (no peg). But sometimes walking over a bump, or just being careless the bass would swing and hit my face. It really does hurt.
I hope that clears up some things

That happens to me all the dang time. Not so much when I'm sitting, but when I march and I'm not paying attention, the instrument will swing and bump into my face. Luckily, I've yet to break a reed that way. Of course, somehow I manage to break them when putting them into reed guards. . .

Maybe a really long peg with a wheel on the end of it would be good for marching??
I've gotten a reed splinter also, but it wasn't that bad. However, I still have a scar on my leg from an encounter with a (string) bass endpin a year and a half ago.

I was going to perform a solo during our 8th grade recital in middle school. Back then I was using a plastic artley clarinet and I used to keep quarters in my case so I could call my parents to come pick me up from practices. So, the day of my solo I got my clarinet out to rehearse with my accompanist, and no sound would come out! Later, after a legnthy panic, I found that a quarter got stuck right in the end of the lower joint.

OH, LAST YEAR WHEN I WAS MARCHING AND I HAD MY CLARINET TOO CLOSE AND WHEN I MOVED TO PLAY I SMACKED IT INTO MY MOUTH!!! THAT HURT ALOT!AND I ALSO CUT MY TONGUE ONCE WHEN I WAS TONGUEING... DON'T QUITE REMEMBER HOW I DID THAT ONE.
