 Upgrade clarinet

Hi

I have started a year ago and I would like to upgrade my plastic buffet clarinet b12. What would you recommend?

Can I go to the old wood clarinets, like normandy or bundy, like?

Or what would be your advise?

Thanks for your help.

a great student clarinet is the e11 or e12 by buffet. great sound if you wish to pursue continued studies with the clarinet. a used r13 is also a great buy

A used Bundy or Normandy wouldn't likely be much of an improvement (and might prove a step backward). Opinions on the E11 vary. Buffet regards it as essentially a wooden B12. I think it's probably a little better than that but not a major step up.

Perhaps you could tell us why you want to (or feel a need to) upgrade? Is there something wrong with your B12? Is it unable to do something you would like to do? I know many teachers who recommend that students stay with a student model plastic clarinet until they are ready for a professional model, i.e., when the student can tell enough difference between instruments to participate actively in an intelligent instrument for him/herself. Considering the kind of instruments you are looking at, I suspect money is an issue. IMO, saving up for a good instrument would be a wiser choice than spending a few hundred dollars now for an instrument that will give little improvement. Perhaps all you really need is some repair work or perhaps a different mouthpiece.

Best regards,
jnk

Thanks

I don't really know much about models, looking again on my clarinet the model is actually a b13 plastic buffet. I understand what you are saying.2 issues:

1) Money matters now.

2) Most of other students are using wood clarinet from a variety of brands and models, me and other guy are the only one's who still using plastic.

We hear almost everyday from the teacher that the sound of a wood clarinet can't be match with a plastic one. We play together but she say that when she listen with of us individually, the sound is quite distinctive.

I don't have money to buy a R13, and don't know if I need one. I had a bit of improvement when I changed my mouthpiece from the original one to a Hyde by Pryde.

I heard more then once: “Your sound is good , but if you could have a wood clarinet you would sound so much better”, and that gives me a king of frustration.

Thanks again for your help

Stick with the B12 and get you a good mouthpiece. I don't think any of the instruments you mentioned would be any better than what you have. I think that the older model Noblet #27 was a very good clarinet for the money....very consistent with a good tone. You see them every now and again on eBay, but you will have to spend the price of the clarinet plus, at minimum, a repad to get it to play. Examine the price of a good used E-11 vs the price of an eBay clarinet + repad price. There won't be but perhaps a $100 difference.

I am not familiar with the Buffet B12 but I found that the E11 was a tremendous improvement over my old plastic clarinet. A better mouthpiece and ligature and better quality reeds helped even more. You can buy an E11 new for about $600. Figure on about $100 or more for a mouthpiece/ligature and a few boxes of reeds.
