reed knife sharpening

how often do u do it?

what kinda stone do u use? and how much was it?

(and what kinda knife do u have?)

refer to reed making book by Jay Light- " The oboe Reed Book". Although geared to oboe reed making, has a very informative step by step on how to sharpen a reed knife. I got my for around $12 at one of the big online book sellers- can't remember which one.

www.forrestsmusic.com is a good site for knives, india stones, and honing oil- all necessary to sharpen your knife.

Fix a piece of 600 grit emery paper on a piece of dowel rod using contact or rubber cement and stroke the paper with the knife. Feel the edge after each couple of strokes and stroke in a cutting direction with the blade at "about" a 20 deg.angle as if trying to cut the paper. If it's a hollow ground blade you should probably "sharpen" using a leather strop.
