I was wondering if anyone else has a lot of neck tension while playing the clarinet and why it would be happenening and any way to make it stop. Thank you!

Check this out on the "search" system. I think we had something on this a short while back. In most cases (IMHO) it is caused by bad posture, aided and abetted by improper height of the music stand causing your head to be canted at a cramped angle. Especially true for us Bass players or anyone who wears bifocals and needs to look askant through them.

The short term fix for any residual pain is heat, I like a warm shower, a heating pad will do, or even an old fashioned hot water bottle.

I do put heat on my neck every night and that does help-but it happens when I am playing-the stand really isn't at a strange angle from what I can tell-it doesn't feel strained because of that-but it gets really tense when playing sometimes and I don't really know why or what I am doing (but it's painful and I need to stop). Maybe it's one of those things that you have to see, so I will have to talk to my teacher next time I see them or have someone else who knows the clarinet well watch me play to see if I am doing anything strange.

if this is a persistent problem, you should seek the advise of a physical therapist who could prescribe proper exercises and treatment to releive the condition. Most likely is posture related, try ICE not heat for 15 to 20 minutes.
