I am looking at purchasing a B flat clarinet .I was looking at a new E13 as I have owned one before and liked it but a shop near me has a Buffet which I am told is serial number D401. I haven't seen or played it yet but am told it is in nice condition and plays well.Any opinion would be valuable although of course I will be trying all instruments before I buy,I am just not very knowledgable about older instruments.

The Buffet serial number D401 would indicate that the instrument was made in 1889...GBK

Another possibility is that the instrument is a Buffet Evette model manufactured in 1964. This would be roughly the equivalent of an E11.

If it was manufactured in 1889, then that was the year they did particularly well in the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Should be a good buy!

The retailer said it was 1929 by his lists,all the lists I checked also say 1889,he also has an old french Selmer that he says is 1920's at about the same price.I've never purchased from him before.If I go with the new clarinet I will be buying it from a shop I have dealt with a lot in the past.

If it is 1889, it may not even be built to today's pitch standard. Even as late as the 1920s, there was more than one pitch standard so you need to make sure that it is in tune with today's instruments.
Be sure to check that it is reasonable in tune at A=440 (US standard) or A=442 (European standard). You should do this check in a romm of about 72°F temperature. Hotter or colder will throw off your results.
If it is not, then you won't be able to get it in tune by pulling the joints as it will throw off the relationships between notes.

My 1889 simple system Buffet clarinet is tuned to high pitch but has a wonderful sound. The E11 is a good choice and will be easier to sell later on as it is a known item. Good luck.

I'm really thinking that I'll go with the E-13,stick with what I know,and the warranty makes me feel a little better.I haven't touched a clarinet in six months so.....

Just out of curiosity, how much do they sell the old Buffet for?

I certainly would not purchase an instrument that old for that high of a price. You might be able to find a decent r-13 for that price.
