Richard Stoltzman will play the Weber Concerto # 1 with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3. Also on the program will be the Mozart Symphony # 39 (the one with the big clarinet solo in the 3rd movement) and Yefin Bronfman playing the Beethoven Emperor Concerto. There's also a pre-concert recital featuring the Weber Grand Duo.
I just got my tickets for Saturday night at www.lincolncenter.org. Good tickets are still available, since they only went on sale yesterday. Not cheap, but essential. Get 'em while they're hot.

Ken...Thanks for the info, and I will try to attend. It will be interesting to hear if his interpretation has changed much since his 1983 recording with the same orchestra. (different conductor)
I've heard him in concert a few times, and each time he has most definitely impressed.
Those clarinetists (especially) who unfairly criticize his style, mannerisms, crossover music, etc... (One critic called him the "Kenny G" of the clarinet) need to rethink how little our instrument would have been in the public eye for the past 25 years without Richard Stoltzman.
I hope Pamela Weston has a chapter already planned for Richard Stoltzman in her next Clarinet Virtuosi book....
(By the way, he turns 60 years old this year) ...GBK

Stoltzman turns 60? never! wow, i never would have guessed!- must be all that practise keeps him looking young and youthful.... i'm off to do some more scales!!!!!!!

Julie, Gervase de Peyer lives in Virginia and still gives occasional recitals around the area (although I haven't heard him yet, hypocrite that I am......) And Charles Stier teaches at Catholic U. (I'm pretty sure) and probably gives recitals around town. And some of the NSO players such as Loren Kitt also do recitals, so it isn't THAT awful in Virginia.......

I think that "big clarinet solo" in the minuet movement is, rather, a lovely duet for the two clarinets - both parts being of equal importance, don't you think?

Thanks for letting people know about this concert and thank you for your nice words about Mr. Stoltzman. He's been my teacher for 2.5 years and I can honestly say that I could never ask for more from an artist, teacher and a dear friend.
Everything he does is done with the best of musical intentions, most often in relation to the human voice, and not for any cheap publicity or gimmicks. He's always himself on stage and never trying to be anyone else. His technique is astounding, from the most beautiful legato to staggeringly fast fingerwork, and this is due in large part to the amount of time that he spends with the instrument.
I remember a funny time in my life when he asked me how much I practised... I said "on a good day, 5-6 hours, but never less than 3". His reply was, "oh.......... well..... do you think you could do 10?" I later asked his assistant at a party at his house how much he actually practises, and she said, quite honestly, about 10 hours per day! I wanted to bury me head in the sand, but then I realized that this was what it took to become the artist that he is today and continues to be.

Ken, thx for the info, I just purchased 2 tickets online and will be there with bells on. My wife's never attended an event of this type so it'll be a unique opportunity for her to experience fine standard clarinet literature and classical orchestra/piano repertoire. I hope we can bump into one another. I'd like very for my wife and I to introduce ourselves and chat a bit.
Anyway you cut it, Stoltzman is a class act on and off stage. He's arguably done more for the instrument publicity-wise than any other clarinetist the past 30-40 years...the industry owes a great deal to him. I've got nothing but admiration for anyone who can even get throuh the Corigliano (not alone nail it to the wall) and be a "complete" clarinetist, take chances/risks, play all the styles and do it well.
