I heard Neidich (sp?) on the radio one day last week playing the Mozart concerto. Can anyone recommend any good recordings of his?

YES I CAN!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just a bit enthusiastic for his playing. Id reccomend the recording (on Deutsch Grammophone) of him and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with

Weber: Concertos No 1 and 2; Concertino
Rossini: Introduction, Theme, and Variations

These are wonderful interpretations of these pieces and he has awesome improvised Cadenzas

Sony Vivarte label CD SPCR9636
Franz Danzi 'Sonata for Clarinet and Pianoforte in B-flat Major'
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy 'Sonata for Clarinet and Pianoforte in E-flat Major'
arl Maria von Weber 'Grand Duo Concertant for Clarinet and Pianoforte in E-flat Major op.48'
Charles Nedich(Clarinet), Robert Levin(Pianoforte)

cf. They use a real 'pianoforte' and Neidich uses staight bore clarinet used in Weber's era. Sounds much more brilliant than present piano and clarinet.

I think I have all of Neidich's recordings except the one on Sony Vivarte with the Reicha and Weber Clarinet Quintets and the Hummel Quartet. While I have enoromous respect (OK, read envy) for his talent and musicianship, where he has competition, I don't regard any of his recordings as personal favorites. In particular, I disagree with Carmen about his DG Weber recording. For me he goes TOO fast and I far prefer John Manasse (but that is personal preference). Also, despite the opportunity to hear the Copland concerto in its original version, I far prefer several other recordings. (FWIW, Stoltzman is my favorite there.) Of my Neidich recordings, I prefer his work on Sony Vivarte to the others and my favorite (which has no competition) is his transcription of two Schumann Violin Sonatas coupled with the Romances. I really do like that one. Unfortunately, I think it's out of print.

Best regards,
jnk

The record label is XLNT Music and the number is CD-18005. The orcestra is the Brooklyn Philharmonic conducted by Lukas Foss. The recording dates from 1989. I think I bought it directly from XLNT. I can't find them on a web site -- there is an XLNT Music, Inc. site but it does not appear to be the same company and was incorporated much later in 2001. I don't know if the company is still around or not. I think I bought my recording directly from them though. The address on the program notes is:

XLNT Music, Inc.
38-62 240th St.
Little Neck, NY 11363

Best regards,
jnk
