I am thinking of getting a new mpc. Whats the difference in the playing capabilities between a morgan rm 06 and morgan RM 28? Does it mean that the RM 28 is a more open mouthpiece? Any comments abt morgan mpcs?

Josh...The specs of the two mouthpieces are as follows:
RM06 - tip opening of +/- 1.06mm (.42")
RM28 - tip opening of +/- 1.28mm (.50")
As has been said on practically every mouthpiece question ever posted on this board, every mouthpiece plays, feels, responds, etc... differently (even those of the supposedly same facing).
Try many - choose one....GBK

Shouldn't the tip opening of 1.06mm be equivalent to .042"
and the 1.28mm be .050? 1 mm = .039

Yes...of course. At .42" or .50" you would have needed a V-12 reed equivalent to a #35.
But think of how "dark" your sound would have been....GBK (who needs a second helping of caffeine this morning)

I use a Morgan RM15 for ligit work and a J5 for jazz. Ralph produces a great MP A RM28 requires some real chops to fully control it. I also use his 8L for tenor sax. This mouthpiece is the most responsive of any I've tried.

While the Morgan is a fine mouthpiece, I assume you're looking at many mouthpieces in addition to the Morgan.
Also, tip opening and lay are highly interrelated. You need to really try out those mouthpieces and not just look at dimensions, even from the same manufacturer.

Or simply turn the reed around so that the heel end is at the tip of the MP. (Stranger things than that have been played over the last 300 years or so.)

I agree that the best way of learning a new desgn is to play it. Don't be too fooled by the whole tip opening thing, alot of it has to do with comfort and flexibility when performing. A more open tip facing has as many drawbacks as a more closed one and yet the tone may be idenitical. Some players can't play on closed facings for some preason and versa visa, so good luck and play before pay!

A tip opening of 1.06mm is medium.
A tip opening of 1.28mm is extremely open -- for jazz only.
Ralph Morgan makes unorthodox clarinet mouthpieces, with a duck-bill shape (like a sax mouthpiece) and a round rather than straight-sided or diagonal-sided chamber.
I played an RM15 for a couple of years. It blows very easily, with a nice, round tone, but for me it lackes resonance and the ability to make more than one tone color. It's great to use in a concert band. You'll never stick out.
The larger stores (e.g., WW&BW) stock Morgan mouthpieces. I'd strongly advise ordering through a place where you have a return option.

It's also good to look at other brands. But, I agree you should try before you buy. There are several places that allow that--wwandbw.com is one. International Musical Suppliers is another. You might be surprised what a couple of days will do to help you decide if you like a mouthpiece.
