 Back Pain. Ug!
Author: Jodi

Hello! For the past couple of weeks or so, I have been having back pain. It has been diagnosed as thoracic (upper and on the left...) I am currently going to Physical Therapy for it. I have been told that it is being caused by the alignment of my head and neck with my back. I hold my head a couple of inches forward, which puts pressure and strain on the muscle. I have now been told that I cannot sit on the edge of my chair to play anymore, but must sit back in the chair with my back touching the chair. This is not in any way a comfortable playing position for me. (The past three and a half years of being told to sit up straight at the end of the chair is ground into my brain.) Has anyone else had similar troubles? If anyone has suggestions, I would welcome them. This is also a little warning to anyone else out there who may lean at all forward while playing. Thanks!
~Jo

You might try getting one of the kneeling chairs that are available now from ergonomic companies. I use one for typing (not for playing...this version doesn't give enough space around the knees for that) and it works very well to keep my back alignment correct. I'd check this with your doctor first, though; I don't want to suggest anything that might make the problem worse

You might try the trick some of my cello playing friends use. They must have their "special" chair at rehearsals (and woe be to the clarinetist who tries to use their chair). There are some chairs more comfortable to sit with your back in the back of the chair. Find one and insist that this be your chair. Your health and comfort is important and that accommodation should be made by any musical group.
