I have seen an old Buffet with a 3rd finger left hand trill ring for c#-d#, serial #F71xxx. Can anyone identify the year? Thanks in advance for your responses.

This serial number is not on the serial number list available here on sneezy. Does the instrument actually say Buffet on it?

The third ring on the left hand is and was available on clarinets as a special order option for the Boehm system. It is commonly referred to as the "forked Eb/Bb." It is no indication of age, brand or model of clarinet.

Buffet clarinets with serial numbers beginning with an "F" were for the European market and were not intended for export although, certainly, some made it to the U.S. They are usually a bit higher in pitch and have a register vent tube placed higher on the clarinet. The remainder of the serial number should date the instrument. The BC model Buffet always had an "F" serial number.
