 Rude?!
Author: Keil

Is it Rude or inconsiderate or disrespectful of us to Instant Message someone via AIM or AOL that is on this board without contacting them through this board first? For example, say there's a clarinetist who frequents this board who you're quite interested to talk to (ie principal clarinet of some wonderful symphony orchestra)... would it be wrong for you to just IM them or is there some rule against IMing/Emailing someone at that level?

Some names are in blue which makes them contactable. Others are in black, and 'unclickable' - How do they do that, by leaving the email box empty? - which presumably means that they do not wish to be contacted.

Presumably if somebody supplies their email address it means that they are willing to be respectfully contacted directly, providing the writer doesn't make a nuisance of themselves.

There seems little connection between a person's status in society and their willingness to communicate with, and help others, in my country anyway.

Being IM'd is a nuisance. IF you are not interested in chatting. It totally disrupts their work or play, and interrupts the person. It's like someone popping up right in your face, whether you want to talk to them or not.

You don't have the advantage of seeing the expression on the face of your new "Friend" , which would normally tell the intruder the whole story.

IMHO,
Becky

If someone has IM on and hasn't blocked everyone - then by all means you can try! That's why there's all those settings in AIM ...

I am not totally against IM's. There has been a few times when I have chatted all night. But when you are not expecting a stranger to find your name and IM you, It gets a little tiresome and a tad scary. It was just My opinion.
I don't use it enough anymore to know all the options. I guess I should learn.

William, The reason I quit putting my e-mail address up, is because of a harrassing e-mail from a bb'r who didn't like my response to his post. It's like getting a harrassing phone call.

Becky I can sympathize with your desire for privacy. I get way too many unsolicited emails every day and I just "Block Sender"...but it's still a hassle. Guess that's what comes from living in society...you don't always get what you want. My personal feeling is that by participating in this BB one sort of acknowledges a willingness to exchange ideas with others....

I am not against corresponding with 'friends' I meet on the bb. I don't have a problem with that. ..........and just so no one thinks I am too discreet, I will put my address up. Just incase someone wants to exchange ideas with me. :)

I don't include my address (yes, you leave that line blank) to help avoid it being "harvested." I recently changed addresses mostly to leave behind a horendous amount of spam. Yes, I know its deletable, but it does take time and attention to go through it and not delete the one or necessary messages. If anyone really wants it, mention it in a post, and I'll send it to you.

For those bothered by Spam and other junk mail, check out a free program called "Mail Washer." Works for me. It previews your mail before you ever see it and then (based on choices you make) puts them in a viewable listing or blacklists them and bounces them. The "bounced" mail goes back to the sender as undeliverable. Soon (??I hope) Spammers start deleting that address off their job lots. Just remember, everytime you register something, you're on another listing.

Spam is a big problem (personally I don't usually get plauged by it at my main email address, only at one of my secondary ones). As with AIMing and EMailing, I personally feel honored that someone would actually want my opinion on something.
