I think The E11 in A is good, and it's not very expensive,( I think)

I looked up Buffet's website - couldn't find a reference to an E-11 in A - maybe I looked in the wrong place? I found the student clarinet model section and then looked under E-11.

Also, I have found that unless you don't plan to continue very long in the orchestra, a not-so-good A will drive you insane. (I know this from experience) If you plan to continue on clarinet, now might be a good time to invest in a good professional "A" that will last.

Ok, last year I went through the exact same scenario. I went to my first youth orchestra concert, and the first piece we read through is Rumanian Rhapsody (Enesco). Anyway, it begins with ONLY a solo clarinet (in A) and here I sit with my Bb- luckily I borrowed someone's for this rehearsal but I told my parents as soon as I got home that I neeeeeded an A clarinet. We checked all local stores for a good used instrument but none came up. Eventually we went the E-11 route at a local music store. I never had it looked at by a competent repairmen before I played it at the next rehearsal, but I found it had several air leaks and major intonation problems. Somehow I made it through with this thing, but I will never want to repeat the experience. At the end of the year my parents did buy me a festival A, so everything did work out in the end. (; If you buy an E-11 A, I would have it checked out and worked on if necessary to correct any deficiencies that it has.

Clarigirl ... now is the time to tell your parents that you're playing Contrabass clarinet in Messean's Illuminations of the Beyond -- and see if they fall for it, remind them that although they are frightfully expensive, they are damned fine investment! LOL

alternatively, you could just buy a really expensive Bb and transpose!!!!!!!!! Ha ha! Only joking, you'd have to be insane!
Get a really good A clarinet.
I had a really cheap and nasty Bb when i first began playing the clarinet, somehow though, I managed to make a pretty good sound out of it....however, I think a cheap and nasty A clarinet would be IMPOSSIBLE to 'train' so to speak.
It will be a good investment if you want to continue....

I found a Kohlert wood cl on sale as a Bb, noticed that it had an A on the UJ and was a bit long, bought it quickly. Moral, keep you eyes open, this one satisfies my infrequent needs. Don

I recently purchased a Buffet E-13 A Clarinet. Yes, an E-13. I have had absolutely wonderful results with it. You may want to try that option also.

To tie this in with the 'eBay' thread: My "A" clarinet was extremely affordable, because it was a little-known (in the U.S.) brand, an older clarinet, that needed an major overhaul. So I bid on it, won it for less than $100, overhauled it, and now have a superb "A" clarinet (as if I really need one, but what the heck!) for less than $150 in cash outlay. So if you're willing to think "outside the (Buffet) box", affordable clarinets (even "A" clarinets and harmony clarinets) can be obtained.

Therein lie the problem, Dave, no clarinet is good unless it's a Buffet, NOT.
