Bell of Clarinet sticking to clarinet stand
Author: Meri
Date:   2002-04-30 22:26

One of my student's instruments is sticking to his clarinet stand (B-12), on a stand that has the round metal base. My instrument does not stick to his stand, but his sticks slightly on my stand. How can I get rid of this problem?

meri

are you certain it's the bell sticking to the stand and not the bore of the lower joint sticking to the top of the peg ???
I encountered the same problem when I used the same peg for different model (same mfg) clarinets.
I resolved the 'sticky' problem by shortening the peg height by 1/2" inch.
hope this helps

It isn't the clarinet bell's fault, it's the stand. You might have to buy a new one..that you've tried out first. Those plastic stands can be mean. Those with rubber cushions can also cling. The guys at the Met use Herb Blayman's (former principal at that opera house)stands may not be very portable but they'll never stick. I've got a double Blayman clarinet stand with its heavy metal base in the studio and that's where it stays. There are portables that do the job but you have to be sure of them before you buy. I use a portable wodden stand with a good spring that also works well.

I think AL's advice is right on, as the stand is the problem, and should probably be replaced. A possible solution which you could try (as a last resort) is to use some self-stick green felt to cover the top part of the peg to stop the sticking. I'm not sure if this will work, but it could be worth a try before replacing the stand.

The Blayman stands are (were) the best. I find that both the double (2 pegs) and the triple (3 pegs) are portable enough, although heavy, to take to any venue. Their weight is a great reassuring factor in preventing "tip over".

The round 4 peg variety is too big to transport - so it stays in the studio..GBK

Notice that I said "his sticks slightly to my stand", mine does not stick on his or mine. So it's probably something with the bell.

The bell could be too damp and creating suction that's keeping it stuck to the stand, try wiping out the bell slightly. Or, sticking a thin piece of cloth over the stand might help, too.

It is probably to do with the nature of the taper in the bore of a particular instrument. The instrument is contacting the stand at a place where there is only a slight taper in the bore, so it jams, just like a Morse taper (engineering term) is DESIGNED to jam. Seeing you do not want to alter your clarinet, you need to remove some material from the part of the stand that actually sticks, or pad up (with felt?) the base of the stand so that the instrument sits a millimetre or two higher, or perhaps attach patches of felt around the stand to contact the LOWER end of the bell's bore, where the taper is greater and less likely to jam. Which solution is more appropriate depends on the type of stand.

I say......

Don't let HIM use your stand. :)

Problem solved.

(Teasing, of course!)

Maybe dust the peg with a bit of talcum powder? As a short-term solution, of course ---- the suggestions above are better long-term fixes.

be sure to swab the clarinet before you put it on the stand. You may find this is just too much wettest inside the horn and it runs to the bell and sticks. I produce a lot of water and it acts like a glueing agent.
