This kind of question doesn't have a universal answer. The question is, which will work best for you?

What kind of instrument do you have? What kind of mouthpiece do you prefer?

I tried both a Vandoren B44 and a Selmer (can't remember which) and found them very similar. I also tried a Woodwind #5 which was also similar and about half the price. For me the Vandoren was slightly better but I would be open to try something else.

Excluding the custom mouthpiece makers, there probably aren't more than a dozen alto clarinet mouthpieces out there so you could easily try them all.

I have a Selmer-Paris Alto cl, and have tried quite a number of mp's, including a B44, two Bundy 3's [an old, slightly brown!, hard rubber, and a newer plastic, prob. "stock"], and my best-player, an "Olympian" 3 [France]. My "best" conclusion is supported by a good clar.-friend who would like to buy it!! for her alto. Tough! My advice is like Gary's, try all you can. If you can find a micrometer- caliper, I'd suggest measuring the bore diameter of the top of the neck and finding the best [diameter] matching mouthpiece and then trying the various lay-configurations, maybe even having a mp refaced to your [or an expert's] desires. Bore sizes vary among the different makes of altos, I believe my Sel is quite a bit smaller than the best LeBlanc, dont know about others, so I think my Sel is closer to a Basset horn bore than most, but dont have proof!! Luck, Don

I use an alto mouthpiece on my basset horn. I've tried the vandoren b40 and the 5RV and much prefer the latter.

The B40 is a fine mouthpiece for the Alto and has much more of a focus on the tone...I think you should keep the B40.
