To these three people, who gave advice about a boosey and Hawkes 1010 (refered to as "buffet" in my idiocy) I wanted to tell you that Santa did bring me the 1010 and it's a wonderful instrument, a bit flat, nut wonderful. Many thanks.

Glad that Santa came through! One thought about the pitch - what mouthpiece are you playing on it? Clarinets like the 1010 and 926 often require a mouthpiece designed for their bores. They are still available commercially, but not in the common brands.

You really need a English style mouthpiece for the B&H 1010. The bore is quite a bit different, and a French style mouthpiece won't play in tune.
Peter Eaton makes excellent mouthpieces for 1010 bore clarinets. I've also read good things about Viotto.

I must say that Emily Jayne caused me to retrieve my B&H 1010 from its resting place in the closet. It really is a nice clarinet. Thank you Dave Spiegelthal for the great overhaul.
I Played it with two mouthpieces. First the original B&H 1010 mouthpiece and then a Vandoren B40. It was certainly a lot closer to proper tuning with the 1010 mouthpiece. I had started to buy a mouthpiece from Peter Eaton some time ago. However, I think I may go with Ed Pillinger instead (pillingermouthpieces.co.uk/). Windcraft also has some 1010 mouthpieces (windcraft.co.uk/dawkes/).

If you want a bit of that '1010 feeling' for cheap, buy an Edgware or Stratford model --- very similar bores and key design for next to nothing, and dozens of Edgwares for sale on any given day on eBay.

I am using the original 1010 mouthpiece. You may remember my 1010 was made in 1981, and sat in the cupboard of a bow-maker, a friend of ours. It came with a 64 mm barrel, but we got a spare and had it shortened to 62 mm.
