Leon Lester had a 28 year career with the Philadelphia Orchestra, first joining in 1938 as its bass clarinetist, taking the position over from Lucien Cailliet...GBK

Leon Lester was a terrific player. He made at least one recording where he can be heard clearly, Janacek's Mladi, where he joined the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet. I'm pretty sure this recording has been reissued on the Boston label along with the other PWQ recordings. Check the ad in the current Clarinet Magazine.

The recording I have of Mladi is taken off-the-air, of the same Philadelphia players but with Leon's successor, Ronald Reuben, on bass clarinet. Ron sounds fantastic (as always).

This is very old post but does any one know Leon Lester's dates? The question was never answered.

I'm thinking sometime in the late 80's, early 90's, but not sure.

I taught a student of his who was about 6 years younger than me, I studied with him in the late 70's.

There was an article in the Clarinet Mag which mentioned his name if I recall. Something about practicing clarinet in a car in a parking lot, and somebody thought he was putting a shotgun in his mouth, so they called the cops.

Anyone else see, hear that story?

For anyone who is still interested, here's a link to a thread I started a couple of years ago. The answer then was that Leon Lester died in 2003.
