 College: Baylor or UT
Author: Sara

After finally receiving all my college decision letters I've narrowed my choices down to Baylor University and University of Texas. I play clarinet and am planning on becomming a music ed major. As far as music education is concerned, which school do you personally think is the better choice? I've heard great things about both and just want some other opinions. Thanks for your input.

Sara,
There are good aspects of each. It sounds like you are a Texas resident, so UT may be cheaper than Baylor. I know a lot of band directors, who have been successful, graduate from UT. I'm sure there are just as many from Baylor, although I have been associated with more choral directros from Baylor than band directors. One of my very best private students graduated from UT with both undergrad and grad degress. I've been very proud of her success. She now teaches in a 5A high school in the Clear Creek ISD as a head band director. Perhaps some graduates from each university can post further information.

How about University of North Texas? Second largest music school in the U.S. and a great program?

Texas Tech in Lubbock has a great music program as well.

Go for the teachers, not the school. Examine the resumes of the music dept staff, and perhaps call and speak to them, then decide. "I studied with ....", may be a bigger factor than which school you attended.

Dear LIsten to me,

I take exception to your comments. I know of several excellent clarinet players and teachers who are graduates of UT. I also know of good clarinetists and teachers who have graduated from Baylor, although I know more choral directors. Just because YOU have never heard of them doesn't mean they don't exits. (....and this comes from a "horned frog" graduate of Texas Christian University!)

Sara,

I also agree with Mitch. I would visit both universities and talk with the clarinet teachers. Most of them are always approachable if you contact them ahead of time. I spent time at both North Texas and Texas Christian before applying just to talk with the band director and woodwinds professor. I personally chose TCU because I came from a small town (population 1052 and graduating class of 52 seniors!...and a proper HE HAW salute to that!) I just felt more comfortable with their personalities.

Others are correct in that there are many universities and colleges from which to chose. I take it that you have already narrowed down your choices to these two. Good luck.

Mitch,

You limit yourself greatly with your "go for the teacher" idea.
A good music school must have more than just a good teacher.
Just ask the good teachers???? Not all of the fine instructors teaching in at the University level have the opportunity to teach at a school that can offer the right recipe for producing great musicians. Their best teaching effort alone may or may not be enough.

How about considering:

Faculty
Facility
Quality of the performing ensembles
Level of student accomplishment...entry/exit
Courses offered
Etc........

Chasing a teacher is just a start...

I woulden't choose UT for study, unless your going to want to mainly do Marching. Mainly due to the size of UT's band it leaves little for one on one instruction. All of the people I've met with music degrees from UT, went somewhere else for Graduate work. For clarinet UNT and SMU are what I have heard as some of the better universitys. All in all though, you need to meet with the Facility and find out which you can work with the best.
