Need your opinions on wind instrument tuning devices.
I'm in a concert band that has intonation problems. One night 3 different tuning devices ( battery powered) were used which got different readings. They cost about $ 60 or more.
Do you think they are accurate or about as faulty as cheap tire gauges ?Thanks. DQ

DQ,
Your band's tuning problems probably don't stem from the use of a tuning device, but more likely the improper use of a tuning device...and several dozen other complex issues.
I have three tuners. A Korg CA-20 that I carry in my case, an older analog Korg that can produce sound, and Peterson's 590...an excellent (and expensive) tool. All three (from least expensive to most expensive) can be calibrated to insure accuracy.

Use a tuning fork, or the vibes or chimes, or a well tuned piano etc to verify the accuracy of the tuners.
I have noticed that my ca-20 will go wildly inacurate when the battery is weak.
Be sure the tuner is reading the instrument that is being tuned, and not another one. I notice that mine will pick up a distant trumpet over my nearby clarinet every time. (Everyone other than the ONE person using the tuner needs to shup up!)

If the tuner can be set for different transposing instruments, make sure it is set for a Bb instrument if Bb clarinet is used. Also make sure it is calibrated.
