Does anybody who does or ever has done recording sessions to make a cd with their college get paid for doing so? I was just wondering about the typical protocol....

Are you a member of the union? Does the students at your school have a collective bargaining agreement with the local union?
I never got paid for performing on a recording during my University days....and we recorded many records. Some even nominated for Grammys.
I don't know of any students currently getting paid to cut SCHOOL recordings.
Things change...I may be out of touch. Perhaps I should have had an agent in college???? Things could have been so different.

Most music schools have you sign a release at the start of the season giving up all rights to monetary compensation for recordings (video or audio) for the course of the year. In this way, Eastman and NEC have managed to produce low-cost, high quality recordings of wind ensemble music that would otherwise not have the chance to be on record.

I would be interested in knowing this as well. I know how hard they work those poor kids when they make those cds for the greater glorification of the band directors. You can bet guys like Corporon get paid, though.

If they don't pay the athletes (who bring 10s of millions in to some of those universities - try driving around Ann Arbor or Columbus on game day) do you think they'll pay the kids who play music?

Well, speaking of Ann Arbor....
When the University of Michigan Symphony Band (under Revelli) made those recordings (this is back in the 1960's), they were paid union recording scale wages.
I will try to remember to ask my colleagues who made many (if not all!) of the Fennell/Eastman Wind Ensemble recordings what they received -- but I believe the terms were similar.
Also remember that this was before there were such things as limited pressing agreements and the like.

I recorded w/ my College last year.... didn't get paid for that. Wish I had! I know my college doesn't make much $$ off of their recordings if any anyway, though. The main point of the recordings at Concordia is ministry and recruitment.
<shrug> It was fun and I am glad to have had the experience. Getting paid would have been nice but it's always cool to say "I'm on such and such CD played internationall" too!
