ANG bands or AF Reserve Bands
Author: Lindsey Ondrey
Date:   2002-04-17 13:37

Are any of you in an Air National Guard band or Air Force Reserve band? Any of you at the ANG band of the midwest?
What's it like? There is a chance I will have to leave AFROTC next year and my hopes of being a band officer, but I am still wanting to serve in the AF in some capacity. Any help you could give me?

There was a thread on this subject last year (late) - I can't remember exact deailts but the "pros" and "cons" or joining the armed services as a musican were discussed at length. Mark, perhaps you might have better luck - my search skills are recalcitrant at best.

Well so much for that conversation. How come I always get referred to old threads? I've read the old threads... I just wanted a new conversation about it. :-/ Maybe a chance to ask questions and respond to people to learn a bit on my own.

Well, if someone can help you specifically, I'm sure they will. The reference to the older threads was a pointer to information in case no one knows anything at all about the ANG or AF Reserve bands, but when you're that specific, the chances are much slimmer that you'll get any relevant info.

Lindsy, there is no such animal as an AF "Reserve" Band, they are ALL Air National Guard Bands, about 16 of them scattered across the CONUS. I'm an active duty AF bandsmen and clarinet picker. Email and I'll provide you with the right POCs and help answer any additional questions you might have. v/r [drjazzz@cox.net]

This says there is such a thing as a RESERVE band.

Which band are you in active duty? I have contact w/ the Commander of the Band of the Midwest at Scott but haven't been in touch with him the past couple months. I was hoping to get to go down there for a few days over the summer and get to see what goes on. :)

Lindsey, The Band of the U.S. "Air Force Reserve" is an ACTIVE DUTY regional/field band. The reason why it carries that title is beacuse Robins Air Force Base, Ga, where the band is stationed is the U.S. Command Headquarters for the Air Force Reserve. I was a member of the band 4 years. As I stated, if you desire specific POCs/phone numbers of the right people who can assist you, email me. I will not and cannot post any personal information publicly without their permission.

Best Regards

Oh ok. :) I didn't realize they were an active duty band. I have always been told that they weren't.

Yes, the band's name is deceiving and commonly mistaken as a part-time reserve unit. I can't remember how many calls we used to get from people or those who approached us at concerts asking/assuming we were weekend warriors. Skimming their website, and "about us" section, I didn't see it specifically stated one way or another (active duty or NOT a reserve unit) which only adds to the confusion.

Occasionally, in the year or so I've frequented this URL, I've seen active duty USAF bandsmen post, usually to announce an upcoming audition/opening in their particular. I believe the Webmaster has also permitted a listing or two of some of the active duty USAF band's contact info and links elsewhere on the site. I myself have never seen any postings or individual identifying themselves as an ANG member, not to say they haven't and I missed it.

I started years ago (1978) in the now deactivated (reassigned to Peoria, Il) Chicago O’Hare Airport ANG Band. I've augmented the Scott Band on several tours the past 2 years and during one last August drove to Lambert Field and sat in for a morning rehearsal with the St. Louis ANG Band. They're a great bunch of people, good talent, laid back and into their music. There are a lot of jazzers in the band but the Commander's emphasis is on concert/ceremonial band. A clarinetist I've known for years was a member of that ANG band and went active duty to the Scott Band. Last I was in contact with the St. Louis band, their slot was still available with a 2nd projected opening upon retirement of another clarinetist.

If you're just kicking tires, peruse the active duty sites including the USAF Band site in Washington, D.C., they'll provide the most current information on enlisted/officer opportunities and vocal/instrumental openings. If you're interested in any ANG Band, call the band Commander at Scott and/or ask for their auditions representative, they should maintain a complete listing and contact info of every exisitng military band in DoD and happy to help you out.

Best of Luck! v/r KEN
