 Yahama Custom
Author: Wendy

I have in my lap a Yamaha Custom that was handed to me this afternoon to bring home & try. The barrel says "Yamaha Custom, Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd., Japan". The model is YCL82, serial #012xx. It has silver plated keys, two barrels, & a double case. The horn is in excellent condition. Can anyone tell me about this instrument? Is it a pro horn? How does it compare to an R-13, which is what I was looking at originally? Any idea how old it is? What would it's approximate worth be? I need to make a decision in about 24 hours. Thanks for your help!

I have a Yamaha catalogue that is pre 1991.
It lists as the top model, YCL82IICS
Presumably it was an interim labelling when the YCL82-SeriesII evolved to become the current CS model.

It would seem that YCL82 was their top model at some time in the past.

The Yamaha Custom was replaced by the Custom II a bit before 91. There's nothing in Wendy's description to indicate it's a series II.
It certainly is a 'pro horn' and IMHO is infinitely preferable to an R13. (I replaced my RC Prestiges with Y Customs) I would guess at a date of about 88-90. The value? It's pretty old so you could probably get it at a very good price. If you like it it's worth a lot. If you don't want it can I have it?
Good luck

i played an 82-11 for some years, and it played very well- i replaced it with an R13 after winning the ICA orchestral audition comp in 1998. The Custom 82 was the model that preceeded mine, and had better tone than the 82-11, but the intonation was more like an R13 on that model (look up old Clarinet editions from the early 1980s for Lee Gibsons reviews- i remember him writing that the YCL 85 was a great A clarinet, and he thought the 82 was an improvement over the R13).
i believe that in the US the YCL 82 and 85 were replaced by the YCL 72 model (without the designation "Custom"... but i never worked out if the 72 and the 82-11 were the same instrument with a different name. I still use my Yamaha Custom 85-11 A clarinet, and while it doesn't quite have the tone i'm after it still sounds ok, plus very good intonation and even response.

I have a pair of Yamaha Customs (the original models, not the II series) and have had many happy years out of them. I like the tone, and find they play easily. I wouldn't dream of trading them.

As to value, I've just updated the insurance on mine and was advised to insure them for £3200 for the pair. So, if you opted for them that's the sort of value you should be looking at.
