To this day I am thankful that my high school band director didn't make us march. We had a voluntary pep band for football games and that was it. I took up an instrument to play music, not to march around like a buck private in boot camp. While other high school bands were out practicing their circle drills in the rain and cold we were inside, warm and dry, practicing music by Holst, Hindemith, Vaughan-Williams, Nelhybel, Creston, etc. Four years of marching would likely have soured me on playing music forever. Instead, I'm still playing after more than forty years and enjoying it more than ever.
