Hey Guys!
Which do you prefer in high school--pep band or marching band? I prefer pep band because the music is just as cool and there isn't as much as a committment. I think it is less costly too. What does everybody else think?

Back when mastodons bestrode the Earth, and I was in high school, I much preferred pep to marching (as I mentioned in the enormous marching band thread of a few days back). In our case, the group was smaller (this may not be the case at large universities that get their basketball teams into the NCAA tournament) and the selections hipper and more fun. Also, while we were well-practiced and sharp, we had a little leeway to innovate on short riffs during basketball timeouts. The main similarity to marching band was having to read smallish notes from books that fit on lyres. In terms of cost, the t-shirts we wore as a uniform certainly didn't run anywhere near as much as the marching band get-up, plumed headgear and all.

Pep Band by all means, no heat, no marching and some fun, loud music. I like loud music sometimes.

I really loved marching band. It was always fun, a good way to make friends and bond with fellow "band geeks." The competition, hard work, and dedication of everyone could really make our band something to be proud of (it didn't always work, of course, but still). It didn't make much musical sense, but I always really enjoyed it.

Diz,
Can you imagine a teenage wind band playing the Vegemite song over and over at a cricket match?
Best regards,

"...Can you imagine a teenage wind band playing the Vegemite song over and over at a cricket match?"
...with 2 dozen drummers who haven't learned much more than the riff from "Wipeout" ...GBK

Marching band, because we march either Broadway or Classical music every year. None of that stupid pep tune while marching stuff.
Sorry, I like pep tunes too, but since I'm half of a military fanatic something about marching just appeals to me... + classical music and I'm almost in heaven!!

Pep band, hands down! Where else can you chant some wicked cheers and actually be heard? Man I love being a member of the most evil pep band in the Mountain West conference. :-) BTW, for the person who mentioned pep bands at large schools, the NCAA limits the pep band to 30 people (including the drum major) for tournaments. Meaning regardless of how big your band is at home, only 29 players are going to see post-season play.

To this day I am thankful that my high school band director didn't make us march. We had a voluntary pep band for football games and that was it. I took up an instrument to play music, not to march around like a buck private in boot camp. While other high school bands were out practicing their circle drills in the rain and cold we were inside, warm and dry, practicing music by Holst, Hindemith, Vaughan-Williams, Nelhybel, Creston, etc. Four years of marching would likely have soured me on playing music forever. Instead, I'm still playing after more than forty years and enjoying it more than ever.

Neither!! I strongly preferred the Wind Ensemble and the Orchestra settings and avoided pep band whenever possible. Marching Band had its moments of glory... until we tried to put a piece that we had already played in Wind Ensemble on the field... that was horrible.

I enjoyed Marching band and pep band. I liked Marching band more, though, and it has helped me out more since I am now pursuing Military bands as a career and while going through ROTC, I must MARCH... you would be amazed how many people who are in the air force who just can't stay in step or keep their body from being wavy all over the place (as my band director in HS used to say... we are NOT a corn field! Keep good posture!)

I never had the opportunity to try marching band, and now wish I had. However, upon arrival at my new school this past fall, I found that there was a thing called a 'pep band' that played at basketball games... Needless to say, I'm now part of it, playing everything under the sun depending on personnel (clarinet/alto/tenor/bari sax/percussion), and having a blast. It probably help that we are one of the few (if not the only) university in our area of the world with a Pep Band-and we delight in making opposing coaches squirm....

I hated them both. The marching and pep bands were there for the athletes who never were grateful for our appearances until we weren't there. I prefer to sit when I play and play at levels other than fortissimo.

Unfortunately, I don't have a choice--in wind ensemble we are required to march a couple of times during football and lacrosse seaons with the other bands--to earn the more weighted credit (it's an "honors level" class) that comes with being a member, we have to do pep.
I'd also prefer orchestra or wind ensemble, but between pep and marching it's a hands down PEP. Playing outside is awful anyway, but at least in pep we don't have a uniform and we can just sit around and hang out during play. Granted, the music is stupid, but the better marching band music is butchered by the other bands that play with us. Wind ensemble plays alone for pep so we play worse music better. We don't have a competitive marching band as there isn't enough interest--it's just a requirement for all of the different bands. Perhaps that's part of where the dread comes from. Not to mention that on our area's annual Memorial Day parade it's never less than 90 degrees and the uniforms are gawd-awful hot.
