 "repair"
Author: Melanie

Well, the mystery of the broken bass clarinet has been solved. It was the side trill keys!!!! The guides on one of the trill keys has been broken off. Because of this, the pad won't seat properly. Also, the pad had been put in crooked. We leave on tour on Wednesday, and don't have time to fix it. So, what my teacher did was take the key completely off, and put a bottle cork in the tone hole. It seems to work well. It just looks ghetto. Luckily, I don't need the key for this concert, so it should be fine. I do hope that we can get it repaired soon though.

If you could just see some of the clarinets in Middle Tennessee... I always joked that we can fix ANYTHING with rubber bands!!

Hey, if it works, go for it! How often do you use that key anyway? Nobody in the audience is going to know. They just want to hear the sweet mellow sounds of that bass.

On several clars, I've had difficulty making a quick fix to a leaking pad on the highest-up trill key, which can act as a register-jumper with even a very slight leak. To get by before an extensive repair, I cut a square of black electrician's tape, put it over the tone hole, sticky side down, and put back on the key with a new pad. Then I smile as it works well. Simple! Don

I've had a piece of bubble gum holding a pad on my alto for a couple months now. =)

(i'm not neglecting it, I've just been too busy with rehersals to fix something that was still working.)

Working until the night of the "big" show, Saturday. Heh... it's a good thing my favorite tech is member of the band and a great friend. =)

I promise it will take it's much needed vacation in a week or so.

Well, believe me, I am not complaining one bit about the fix it up job that he did to the instrument. I was excited to finally be able to play the instrument. All of the help that everyone gave me in trying to find the culprit key on the instrument was greatly appreciated. I think I would have given it up and assumed it was all me had everyone not said it was probably the instrument. Well, thanks again.
