Dear all!
I was wondering if any of you might know whther the BAM bass clarinet case is approved for carry on luggage on airplanes, and if not, what would be the best way for me to make sure that when I travel, it won'd be damaged?
thanks,michal.

It has been my limited experiance on airline travel that the only criteria for carry-on baggage is that it be able to fit in the overhead storage compartments. Certainly, my new Buffet Presige low C bass clarinet case would qualify, as does my Yamaha softside double clarinet case. But be ready for some extra security scrutiney--I (and in particular, my clarinet case) was opened and thoroughly inspected at every opportunity on my last flight from Milwaukee to West Palm Beach, FL. They even opened my reed case. Pack your reed knife and other pointed tools in your checked luggage as they will be taken from your carry-on cases and not returned. Hope this helps--Good Clarineting!!!

I'm getting ready for a trip down to Palm Beach with an alto sax and a (wood) clarinet, and after talking to a few veterans of airline travel about the best way to go about it (post-9/11), I've decided to pack the alto sax inside a suitcase and check it as luggage, but carry the clarinet onboard with me. I'll take all knives, screwdrivers, and other potential terrorist weapons out of my clarinet case and pack them in the alto sax case for the flight down. We'll see if it works OK. I'm hoping the baggage compartment in the aircraft has some temperature control --- if it gets too cold in there I'll be worried about the pad cement on my alto getting brittle and maybe causing some pads to fall off, but as I understand it (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) jetliner baggage holds are all pressurized and environmentally conditioned, in which case there shouldn't be a problem.

Don't be too sure about your Buffet Low C Bass. I am traveling to New York City in May for some concerts at Carnegie. I called the airline about taking my Buffet Low C on board. True, you must be able to store the item in the overhead for it to be considered carryon. However the case for the Low C Bass is about 10 inches too long to fit in the overhead compartment. Therefor one cannot cary it on. HOWEVER, one can take it on board with you if you purchase an ectra seat, dsignated for extra luggage. It does get costly doing this, however one has the ability to carry their large items (i.e. clarinets, cello, tubas) on board with you.
I'm being fully compensated for the trip so I have no worry about the cost, however you may not.
I would consider calling the airline and talking to someone about it. And talk to peopple until you get an answer other than "sorry, you just ahve to check it and have it be under the plane." I called twice until someone was amazingly helpful and answered all of my questions. the important thing is to be polite and talk and ask questions until you are satisified with the result. It may not be the cheapest option, but it may be one you can be comfortable with.
If someone ahs any other experiences with traveling with their Low C bass, feel free to interject their anticdote.

actually, there have been at least two threads covering this in the last 6 months.... but one thing- just becuase someone said something was OK on the telephone doesn't mean anything.... in the last couple of years i've twice been assured that things (extra carry on luggage/musical instrument etc) were ok by someone on the telephone, only to have trouble at the airport or in the plane. How can i put it nicely.... um- people may lie to you to get you off the phone, and having taken down their name isn't much help when you are checking in at 11pm on sat night after a concert..... (this was once in the US, once in Germany).
